Lip augmentation or enhancement, is a cosmetic procedure to increase or improve the fullness/shape of the lips. Augmentation can be either temporary or permanent and may use a variety of fillers and materials including Juvederm, Restalyne and lip implants.
Lip augmentation not only improves the appearance of fullness of your lips, but can also minimize fine lines and wrinkles around your mouth.
A lip augmentation procedure usually takes place in a surgeon’s office-based facility.
The type of anesthesia used will depend on the technique. Some procedures may only use a topical anesthetic while others may involve local anesthesia.
The amount of time needed depends on the technique used. Fillers typically take 30-45 minutes while lip implants generally take around 1 hour to complete.
The lips are numbed with topical anesthetic before using fillers. There may be some swelling and bruising but this is controlled with cold compresses for the first few hours after the procedure. The lips are numbed similar to a dental procedure with lip implants.
Swelling and/or bruising can occur with this procedure as well. The lips may feel tender for several days.
Patients usually return to work the next day after lip injections. Patients usually take 1-3 days off with lip implants simply because of swelling.
Possible lip enlargement complications include bleeding, uneven upper and lower lips, implant shifting or erupting through the skin.
Lip implants will last indefinitely until removed. Filler products typically last from 6-12 months depending on the product.
