30 Things Every Woman Should Have and Should Know by the Time She Turns 30

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

#14. A skin care regimen, an exercise routine, and a plan for dealing with those few other facets of life that don’t get better after 30.

This is # 14 from the list which was originally created in 1997 (see below). Some things haven’t changed. If you want to remain looking young, take care of your skin. Protect your skin from ultraviolet radiation [sun and tanning beds :-( ] Exercise, remain fit, take care of your body, eat right. Even so, after doing these things, there are some things that diet and exercise won’t fix: loose skin, sagging breasts, abdominal wall stretch after pregnancy. That is where plastic surgery can help. Make smaller fixes while you’re still young and enjoy the benefits. You’re only as old as you think you are. Breast lifts, breast augmentation, liposuction, tummy tucks, Botox, Juvederm, Radiesse, Sculptra – all readily tolerated procedures to help you look your very best and feel better about yourself. Please call us to learn more about these procedures to improve your appearance.

Nonsurgical Technique Can Take Years Off the Appearance of Aging Eyes

Volumizing the Brow with Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
New York, NY (Vocus) August 17, 2009 — As one ages, the characteristics of the eyes change in generally predictable ways: the skin thins and becomes less elastic, brows may descend, the upper lid may recede or enlarge, and the bones around the eyes appear more prominent. While surgery has long been the accepted standard and offers significant benefits to many patients, injectable treatments are proving to be a viable option for taking years off the appearance of aging eyes. An article appearing in the current issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, a publication of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), details the use of hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers as a reliable and long-lasting method for improving the eye area.

“In some cases, the addition of volume may provide a better-looking result than traditional surgical procedures,” says Val Lambros, MD, author of the article and a plastic surgeon practicing in Newport Beach, California.

“Although the upper lid can be improved with injections, the area we treat is the brow. In some cases, filling in the brow expands the lid skin sufficiently to smooth wrinkles.”
According to Dr. Lambros, adding volume in the brow area can make the eye appear longer and fuller with less upper lid showing, all characteristics of a youthful eye. However, as in all cosmetic procedures, there is no “one size fits all” approach. “These are true aesthetic choices that must be decided through the patient’s consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon,” advises Dr. Lambros.

Since the 1980s, the standard method for volumizing the brow line has been by fat injection. Excellent results
can be achieved using this method. The risk with fat injections, however, is that over time some of the fat may not survive. In some cases, the injected fat may actually grow as the patient ages or gains weight, resulting in unevenness in the brow area.
Hyaluronic acid has been used to treat the brow and upper lid since its introduction in 2005, using a technique similar to that of fat injections. Dr. Lambros prefers HA to fat for brow volumizing because he says contouring is easier, and HA is less subject to variability than biologic fillers. In the brow area, HA has been shown to produce long-lasting results, extending beyond two years. In addition, the effects of HA can be reversed immediately, using hyaluronidase (an enzyme that degrades hyaluronic acid), should the patient be displeased with the volumization effect.

When it comes to the eyes, a little can go a long way. “Brow volume procedures should not be overdone; more is not always better,” adds Dr. Lambros. “Most candidates for brow improvement with HA elect to begin treatment with small amounts of product, and are very satisfied with the results.”

Dr. Lambros gives patients the opportunity to preview their final look, a benefit not available to patients undergoing surgery. He creates temporary volume by injecting diluted local anesthetic which is threaded into the brow and molded into shape. If desired, the patient can choose to undergo the procedure immediately following the preview, since the brow is already anesthetized.

The use of injectable fillers in the brow is a complicated process and requires great skill and experience. “Because of its dependency on technique, only qualified injectors and board-certified plastic surgeons should be performing this procedure,” states Renato Saltz, MD, president of the Aesthetic Society. “When performed properly and by appropriate medical professionals, the use of HA fillers is safe, effective, and produces
long-lasting results.”

Cosmetic Quick Fixes for the Holidays

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Thanksgiving is over and now its time to start getting ready for the holiday party season: office parties, neighborhood parties, and annual Christmas parties all culminating with a big New Year’s Eve celebration. Most surgical procedures take a little time to recover from, so there may be other options that can get you looking your best without the down time of surgery.

There is still a month left before New Year’s Eve so there are some options that fit right into that time frame. A deeper chemical peel with a week to 10 days of down time can dramatically improve your complexion. Using a skin care regimen that incorporates Retin-A will also improve skin quality without any down time or recovery and it will bring about noticeable reduction in fine lines and wrinkles in as little as one month. Using Latisse is an easy daily routine to lengthen eyelashes and can show some dramatic changes in as little as 4-6 weeks.

If less time is available, consider soft tissue fillers such as Juvederm or Radiesse to plump up lips, diminish creases around the mouth and nose and fill in depressions which can catch shadows in the holiday lighting. These are easy in office procedures that take only a few minutes and have no down time or recovery.

Botox can be used to decrease or eliminate crow’s feet around the eyes. Botox can also reduce frown wrinkles between the eyebrows and on the forehead. This is also a quick in office procedure with no recovery and results are noticeable in as little as three to four days and peek after about three weeks.

Other less invasive skin treatments can improve skin quality and complexion with little recovery time. This could include Dermasweep to freshen the skin and stimulate new collagen formation or a lunch time peel that can also offer improvements to your complexion and skin tightening.

Whatever your short term or long term goals our professional medical aesthetician and surgical team can work with you to develop a plan to help you look your very best.

What are the best alternatives to a face lift?

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

The primary purpose of a facelift is to remove excess skin and reposition soft tissues that through aging and gravity have migrated down on the face. It is difficult to accomplish these goals through other methods; however, there are options for individuals looking to look younger and more rejuventated which do not necessarily involve surgical procedures.

One of the primary ‘tell tales’ of aging is the appearance of the skin. Aging, sun damage, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and a history of acne can all decrease the aesthetic appearance of the skin.

In facial rejuvenation, the skin plays the most important role. Just as wrinkles and sagging skin can make us appear aged, healthy and vibrant skin can give us a younger healthier look. Although aging affects every part of our body, it is most noticeable in our skin. Daily skin care combined with a well-balanced diet, plenty of rest, abstinence from smoking, and protection from ultraviolet radiation are the keys to maintaining healthy skin.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes the greatest long-term damage to your skin. UV radiation damages the elastin fibers of the skin, decreasing its resiliency. UV radiation also decreases the immune response of the skin and the whole body. The greatest source of UV radiation is the sun, but it also comes from tanning booths and even some indoor lighting.

The natural aging process in combination with environmental factors such as UV radiation, cigarette smoking, and alcohol consumption give skin an aged and “tired” look to it. Microscopic evaluation of aged skin shows disarray of the collagen fibers that give skin its structural support. Proper skin treatments can help to reorient these fibers and return some of the skin’s natural vibrancy and reduce wrinkles. Thin and fragile skin can be made thicker and more resilient, while tough, thick skin can be made smoother and softer.

There are a number of products (Nia24, Revale, Neocutis, Retin-A, etc) and treatments available (microdermabrasion, Dermasweep, chemical peels, laser resurfacing, IPL etc) to improve the qality of the skin. The best ones are usually available through a physician’s office. The strength of the ingredients is usually greater than over the counter products and they are often more effective and less expensive on a per volume basis.

Soft tissue fillers (Collagen, Radiesse, Juvederm, etc) can be used to replace collagen and/or fat that has atrophied through the years. These are commonly placed in the folds from the corner of the nose to the lips (nasolabial folds)and in the lips themselves.

The most important aspect of this process is to find a plastic surgeon (Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery or American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) you have confidence in and express to him/her your specific wishes and goals. Then listen carefully to the specific recommendations, ask questions and have realistic expectations.

How does Vitamin C help my skin?

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Vitamin C inhibits skin-damaging free radical activity.  It is also a requirement for collagen production, which declines as we age. Vitamin C plays a vital role in skin repair.  If the skin is injured its Vitamin C content quickly scavenges free radicals and helps to remanufacture collagen to speed healing. The best way to get Vitamin C to the skin is through a topical application. Ideally, this would be done immediately after some type of exfoliating procedure such as DermaSweep. It can, however, also be done by applying a Vitamin C agent such as C-Quench (by Physicians Choice of Arizona) after cleansing the skin in the evening.
